Our focus for May: “Show Up & Shine: Book Marketing Without Burn Out.”
By now you’ve probably realized that the easiest part of writing a book is… actually writing the book. Then comes the hardest part: selling the book. Cue existential dread.
If you’re unsure what to do next, you’ll quickly find a thousand helpful tips instructing you to do a thousand helpful things. Post at the perfect time, on the perfect days, on the perfect platforms, with the perfect content. Even if you think you’ve figured it out, you’ll soon find a thousand reasons you’re doing it wrong.
Before you run screaming into the void (where you suspect all your hard work has already vanished), let me share two important insights:
The best approach is the one that naturally works for you.
That approach might be simpler—and more freeing—than you imagine.
Rethinking Social Serfdom
When Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook in 2004, we called it "social networking." By 2007, Facebook had introduced paid advertising and the term "social media." Today, social media might seem like a natural place to market your books, but unpaid content from creators often gets hidden or suppressed.
Social media platforms actively discourage external links because their primary goal is keeping users scrolling to boost ad revenue.
Think back to medieval serfdom. Peasants labored on land owned by lords, giving their effort, produce, and loyalty in exchange for minimal rights and basic protection. Today's digital landscape mirrors this "social serfdom." Users create content and data on corporate-owned platforms, receiving minimal benefits or control while companies profit extensively.
Just as medieval serfs sought new lands for freedom and opportunity, many creators today are migrating away from restrictive digital platforms, seeking fairer terms. Even “Mark Zuckerberg Says Social Media Is Over,” reports The New Yorker.
So, where can you find these greener pastures? Imagine discovering the perfect platform where marketing doesn’t mean sacrificing your mental health. The right answer depends on you, but for me, it’s Substack.
Every author needs a digital home to gather fans, an email list to directly connect, and effective outreach strategies—all wrapped neatly in a visually appealing package. I discovered an easy, streamlined solution on Substack that meets all these needs. Picture yourself effortlessly adopting and customizing this system to fit your unique style and goals. If it accomplishes your goals without overwhelming your life, it's a winner.
Here’s exactly how I've realigned my author platform:
✅ The Digital Home: Traditional author websites started fading a few years back. In 2010, I couldn’t imagine not having a polished author page. By 2019, many authors shifted their domains directly to social media. By 2020, despite growing author visibility, my blog engagement sharply declined. Now, I’ve consolidated my entire online presence onto Substack. For inspiration, explore
’s Substack. She has done an excellent job at using her Substack real estate.✅ Keep Your Fans Close: Substack isn’t just a landing page; it perfectly manages your subscriber list. Unlike services charging for email list management, Substack is free. If you opt for paid subscriptions, Substack takes just 10%, leaving you around 87% after payment processing fees. Imagine actually earning income instead of paying to send emails!
✅ Goodbye Social Serfdom: While social media platforms monetize your posts, Substack is ad-free, designed solely to connect authors directly with readers. I started with 400 email addresses collected over a decade—many outdated or forgotten. Yet, Substack organically grows my subscriber list by about 100 new people monthly. Instead of losing the fruits of your labor, imagine gaining a thriving marketplace dedicated to your creativity.
Below you can see from my humble start of 400 names scribbled on yellowed notepaper to now nearly 4,000. That isn’t a large platform, but with the consistent monthly growth I get from Substack I no longer stress about gaining followers. You can see a steady uptick near the end of 2024. That’s when I fully committed to Substack by linking it in my bio, interviews, and speaking engagements with the goal to eventually replace my website.
There is No Guaranteed Path
Substack has been the most successful platform I've used, but it's not magic. No single platform guarantees readers without strategy and consistent effort—but as a creative, would you even want that? This month, we embrace a new mindset: marketing isn’t selling out; it's helping the readers who need your book to find it.
The simplest marketing strategy is the most effective because it is the one you can do—the one that naturally aligns with your authentic self. Stay true, stay clear, and genuine connection (and sales!) will follow.
This Week’s Download: Substack Start-up A Quick-Start Guide for Authors
I created this guide to provide authors with a clear and practical introduction to launching and growing your successful presence on Substack. It highlights the benefits of Substack compared to traditional social media, emphasizing greater content visibility, audience ownership, higher engagement, and direct revenue opportunities. The guide also offers a detailed step-by-step process for setting up a publication, creating engaging content, and effectively migrating social media followers to Substack. I hope it will be a valuable resource for authors aiming to build meaningful connections and monetize their work independently.
